April 2015 #GeriMedJC

In lieu of a long article discussion, the first part of the live journal club was a special presentation from Dr. Paula Rochon on Exploring Sex Differences in Adverse Drug Events.  Dr. Rochon is a geriatrician and the Vice-President of Research at Women’s College Hospital. She is also a senior scientist at Women's College Research Institute, a University of Toronto professor (Department of Medicine, and the Institute of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation) and a senior scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. She has published widely including several articles relevant to this topic:
  1. Atypical antipsychotic use and parkinsonism in dementia: effects of drug, dose, and sex. Am J Geriatr Pharmacother. 2012 Dec;10(6):381-9.
  2. Older men with dementia are at greater risk than women of serious events after initiating antipsychotic therapy. J Am Geriatr Soc. 2013 Jan;61(1):55-61.
April was a special month for #GeriMedJC for two reasons: First,  we welcomed the first author of the article selected for discussion to Twitter, Dr. Patricia Mills, from the University of British Columbia.  Follow her on Twitter: @patriciabmills.  Second, the Ontario Telemedicine Network included webcasting capabilities for viewing the live hour of the journal club (by invitation only).

The short article critically appraised during #GeriMedJC on April 24 was:

Mills PB, Fung CK, Travlos A, Krassioukov A. Nonpharmacologic management of orthostatic hypotension: a systematic review. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2015 Feb;96(2):366-375.

This systematic review looked at the evidence for non-pharmacologic interventions for orthostatic hypotension such as exercise, FES, compression, physical countermaneuvers, head of bed up, water intake, and meal strategies.
